APR and a representative example

The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is the yearly cost of credit to the borrower. It includes the interest rate and all other charges taken when the loan is set up, such as the processing fee and documentation charges. Because it captures fees, APR is the fairest way to compare two loan offers.

Representative example. You borrow ₹5,00,000 at 10.50% p.a. for 60 months. The processing fee is 1.5% (₹7,500).

Monthly EMI₹10,747
Total interest over 60 months₹1,44,817
Processing fee₹7,500
Total cost of borrowing₹1,52,317
Total amount payable (EMIs + fee)₹6,52,317
APR11.16%

Illustrative only. Your actual rate, fees and APR depend on the lender's assessment and are shown in the lender's Key Fact Statement before you accept. Loans facilitated by CreditSaathi have repayment periods of 3 to 84 months and APR ranging from 11.16% to a maximum of 35% p.a.

The calculator is for illustration only. APR is computed as the rate at which the EMIs equal the amount you actually receive (loan amount minus upfront charges), shown as a yearly rate.

How is EMI calculated?

Banks and NBFCs use the reducing-balance method: EMI = P × R × (1 + R)N ÷ [(1 + R)N − 1], where P is the loan amount, R the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and N the number of monthly instalments.

Example: ₹10,00,000 at 12% p.a. for 48 months. R = 0.01, N = 48. EMI = ₹26,334. Total repayment = ₹12,64,032, of which interest is ₹2,64,032.

  • Age: usually 21 to 58 years for salaried and up to 65 for self-employed applicants, depending on the lender
  • Residence: Indian resident with a serviceable pincode
  • Income: regular income credited to a bank account; most lenders look for at least ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month for salaried applicants

Your rights under RBI's digital lending rules

  • Key Fact Statement: a standard KFS with APR, all fees, the repayment schedule and grievance contacts before you sign.
  • Direct disbursal and repayment: money moves only between your bank account and the lender's. No pass-through or pooled account of any LSP is used.
  • Cooling-off period: you can exit the loan within the look-up period stated in the KFS by repaying principal and proportionate APR, without penalty.
  • No automatic limit increases: credit limits cannot be raised without your explicit consent.
  • Data protection: data is collected only with your consent, for a stated purpose, and stored in India. LSPs cannot access your contacts, files or media.
  • Fair recovery: you are told the name of any recovery agent before they contact you. Harassment or threats are prohibited.
  • Grievance redressal: each lender and LSP has a nodal grievance officer. If a complaint is not resolved within 30 days, you can approach the RBI Integrated Ombudsman.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Borrowing more than you need; it raises both EMI and total interest.
  • Comparing only interest rates instead of APR.
  • Applying to many lenders at once; each formal application can add a hard enquiry.
  • Choosing an EMI above what your monthly budget can carry.
  • Signing without reading the KFS, foreclosure terms and penal charges.
  • Paying anyone an "advance fee" to get a loan sanctioned. This is always fraud.

Why personal loan applications get rejected

  • A low credit score or recent missed payments
  • Income below the lender's minimum, or irregular credits
  • High existing EMIs (debt-to-income above about 55%)
  • Many recent loan or card enquiries
  • Mismatched or incomplete documents
  • Pincode not serviced by the lender

Frequently asked questions

What is a personal loan?

An unsecured loan from a bank or NBFC that you repay in fixed monthly instalments (EMIs). No collateral is needed. It can be used for any lawful personal need, but not for speculation, gambling or any illegal purpose.

What is the difference between interest rate and APR?

The interest rate is the price of the money borrowed. APR adds every fee charged at the start, such as the processing fee and documentation charges, and expresses the total as a yearly rate. RBI requires lenders to show the APR in the Key Fact Statement.

What is a Key Fact Statement (KFS)?

A standard summary the lender must give you before you sign. It lists the loan amount, interest rate, APR, all fees, the EMI schedule, the cooling-off period, recovery and grievance details.

Can I cancel a loan after it is disbursed?

Yes, within the cooling-off (look-up) period specified by the lender in the KFS. You repay the principal and the proportionate APR for those days, with no prepayment penalty.

Can I prepay or close my loan early?

Usually yes. On floating-rate loans to individuals, lenders cannot charge foreclosure fees. On fixed-rate loans a charge may apply; it is stated in the KFS and loan agreement.

How are penal charges calculated?

Under RBI rules, lenders charge a flat penal charge on missed payments rather than adding penal interest to your interest rate. The amount must be disclosed in the KFS.

Who will contact me for recovery?

Only the lender or a recovery agent it has disclosed to you. Agents must follow RBI's fair practices code: no calls before 8 am or after 7 pm, no threats or harassment. CreditSaathi does not collect repayments.

Will CreditSaathi access my contacts or photos?

No. We never access your contact list, photos, files or call logs. Camera, microphone or location access, if ever needed for KYC, is requested once by the lender with your explicit consent.

Disclaimer: CreditSaathi is not a lender. Loans are offered by the RBI-regulated lenders listed on our partners page, at their sole discretion. Rates and fees shown are indicative. Borrow only what you can repay; missed EMIs attract penal charges and hurt your credit score.
